We all love traveling. It provides ample opportunities to see new places, meet new people, learn new cultures, etc. Visiting new areas not only opens your eyes to vast new experiences, it also opens your taste buds. Different regions of the world have different cuisines. And, at the same time, these cuisines have different flavors, dishes, and foods that you might have no idea about. This provides you with a great opportunity to try and feel the local gastronomy.

Most people tend to look for the best places to eat even before they travel there. This gives them a nice idea of the most popular restaurants in the area and the cuisines they need to try. You’ll even find many people traveling to different countries just to try the different cuisines, which makes it even more interesting. One of the places that is popular for its cuisine and culinary experiences is Shanghai, China. Shanghai’s gastronomy has Chinese roots that are mixed with an increasingly international identity.

Shanghai’s food brings together the traditional and the contemporary. This is an exciting aspect of the city, and it’s intriguing for many tourists. You’ll find varied restaurants, from those very old venues serving traditional food to the new French-themed Michelin restaurants. If you’re planning to visit Shanghai in the near future, here’s a guide to the best restaurants in Shanghai that you must visit.

Ultraviolet

It’s one of the two restaurants in Shanghai that has been awarded three Michelin stars. This high concept restaurant takes experiential and experimental dining to a completely different level. Conceived by one of the most popular French chefs, Paul Pairet, the restaurant first started in 2012. Since then, it has boggled the taste buds of the people. It’s a must visit for all the tourists and travelers as it provides a unique experience.

TAKEAWAY: The location of the Ultraviolet restaurant is secret. If you are dining at this exclusive venue, you must first go to Mr & Mrs Bund, another of Paul Pairet’s restaurants. From there, a private driver will take you to the culinary destination, a hidden bunker in one of Shanghai’s old neighbourhoods.

The secret location is a windowless room that contains nothing except for a long table that can accommodate 10 guests at a time. Once you reach the venue, you’re then immersed in the feast that focuses on unusual and experimental taste combinations that are sure to intrigue your taste buds. To make your experience even more unique, you’re subjected to different kinds of music, smells, and image projections on the walls of the room.

The food served to you in Ultraviolet is undoubtedly the star of the show. You get to experience more than 20 courses of culinary alchemy. It’s a heaven for all the food lovers and for the people who like to have different food experiences.

T’ang Court

It is a three Michelin star restaurant that has been recommended and featured in the Michelin Guide since the year 2009. It’s the first restaurant in Shanghai to get the prestigious three Michelin stars, which makes it even more special. T’ang Court is one of the only four Cantonese restaurants in the world to have received this amount of recognition from the Michelin Guide.

Executive chef Justin Tang is the mastermind behind the menu. He takes immense pride to use premium ingredients employed during the Tang dynasty to showcase the Cantonese cuisine at its best. Also, you get great ambiance with the modern light-filled dining space of The Langham hotel. In T’ang Court, you get the option to choose between set menus and individual plates of local specialties. It is an excellent place for people who would like to have traditional Cantonese or Tang dynasty cuisine.

8 ½ Otto e Mezzo Bombana

After spending more than 15 years in Asia, Chef Umberto Bombana has become a star of the gastronomy scene. Using all his experience and following the success of 8 ½ Otto e Mezzo Bombana in Hong Kong that received three Michelin stars, Bombana opened this branch in Shanghai in 2012. The restaurant is named after the famous Fellini’s autobiographical film named 8 ½. It also draws inspiration from Italian cuisine and the culinary vision of Chef Bombana.

The restaurant offers a menu filled with simple Italian food that feels authentic and homemade. You also get a seasonal menu that’s created around the availability of various delicacies, like the Alba White Truffle. One of the most intriguing parts of the restaurant, apart from the food, is the rustic and quirky setting, which is a treat for many.
