7 Steps to grill a healthy and delicious steak

Last Updated on March 15, 2023

Eating healthy is something that all of us should work towards. However, not many manage to do so. The main reason behind it is that most of us think that eating healthy means that we’ll have to stop eating everything that tastes good. Well, that isn’t the case. Just because you’re healthy doesn’t mean that you have to abandon all the things that you love. You can learn how to grill a healthy and delicious steak and other foods you may love.

If you’re a big fan of steaks, you should know that they are a healthy protein source and can be incorporated in diets if cooked in a healthy manner. Minus the cheese, the oil, and cook it on a grill or an electric smoker, and you’ll be good to go. Yes, it is that easy. However, just because you’re eating healthy doesn’t mean that you have to compromise on taste.

Check out these seven steps that will help you grill a healthy and delicious steak like never before:

1. Careful while buying

When you go to the shops, you should always remember that the cut of meat that you use will matter a significant deal depending on the taste you’re going for.

One thing we often assume is that the higher the price, the better the taste. However, that is not the case. Fatty cuts can add a lot of flavor to the steak, but you might have to compromise on it.

Lean meat is recommended for those on a diet. But don’t worry, we’ll help make that taste just as good.

2. Remove excess fat

Since you’re trying to grill a healthy and delicious steak, cutting back on the fat is recommended. A tip to keep in mind is that you should ask the butcher to do it for you rather than trimming the fat when you get home. This way, you’ll only have to pay for the cut weight.

However, while doing so, try not to take all of it off; small bits of fat along the edges are sure to add flavor, and as long as you have a specific amount of physical activity, you’re good to go.

3. Right temperature

Most people are impatient cooks and, therefore, often have a problem with the meat’s taste.

Before you make your steak, you should wait for it to come to room temperature, give it the time it needs, especially if it was in the fridge for a long time.

When the meat has been in the freezer for a long time, it will be needed to defrost it 1 to 2 hours.

Don’t defrost it in the microwave, set it out, and let it cool down. If you hurry, it might stay uncooked from the middle; you wouldn’t that happen now, would you?

4. Seasoning

Once the steak has come to room temperature, the next step should be seasoning. While many people stick to the traditional black pepper and butter seasoning, I usually go a little further.

Try using red pepper (as per your taste), vinegar, and herbs (thyme, oregano, rosemary, and tarragon). Leave the steak marinated for at least 30-40 minutes.

Some people also go for seasoning the steak before they freeze it. This way, the steak can soak in all the flavors, and once it comes to room temperature, you can directly put the red meat on a gas grill.

Know that you don’t have to stick to a strict recipe, try using herbs and spices that you like, and see how it turns out. Becoming a good cook means that you need to take risks and be innovative. So, try out different seasonings and see which one you like best.

5. Preheat the grill

Know that the grill’s temperature also makes a significant difference when it comes to grilling a steak. You need the steak to be cooked evenly, and for that, you need to make sure that the grill is preheated.

Most of the time, if the grill isn’t heated, the outside of the steak has a beautiful sear by its undercooked in the middle. You will also need to consider the different timings when using blackstone vs pit boss griddle.

You wouldn’t want such a nice steak to waste just because you didn’t preheat the grill now, would you?

6. Constant monitoring

Once the grill is preheated and thinks that it is at a decent temperature, put your steak on, and wait for it to cook. Remember to look at the steak at regular intervals.

Use a digital thermometer to check the temperature of the steak at the thickest parts. Once you’re satisfied with the internal temperature, your steak will be done.

Each side of the steak requires more or less five minutes to cook beautifully, but you need to check it again and again. Five minutes is an estimated time frame, once the internal temperature is about 112 -115 degrees F, that’s your cue to take it off the grill.

7. Give it time

Last but not least, give it time to rest. Most people try to have it as soon as it’s off the grill, and shouldn’t be the case.

Once the steak is taken off the grill, it needs to cool down, so the juices stay inside. If you cut the steak too early, your steak doesn’t taste as good as it was supposed to.

So, let it sit for 5 minutes, and then you’re ready.

Final thoughts

Now that you know how to grill a healthy and delicious steak, you can make it part of your diet.

Because choosing a healthy lifestyle doesn’t mean that you have to stop eating foods that you love. You can’t expect to always eat cold turkey and try to be consistent. It is much better to learn new ways to incorporate the things that you like into your diet in a healthy way so that you are consistent in your efforts.

So, whether it’s a steak or fries, try to cook them so that you can decrease the number of calories rather than eliminate them. Know that a healthy diet is a balanced diet. So, before you remove a whole food group from your routine, remember that it is not always the best option.
