Rome Food Stops Along Our Favourite Walking Route โ€” What to Eat Near Each Landmark ๐Ÿ

Last Updated on April 16, 2026

On a sightseeing walk through Rome โ€” from the Colosseum to the Vatican โ€” youโ€™re going to pass some of the best food in the city.

The problem is, youโ€™re also walking through some of the most tourist-heavy areas in Italy. That means a lot of restaurants look greatโ€ฆ but they can be overpriced tourist traps that can mean missing some great options just nearby.

This guide follows the walking video provided below and highlights reliable places to eat along the way, so you can stop when it makes sense without falling into the usual traps.

๐Ÿ• Stop 1 โ€” Near the Colosseum (quick start option)

Li Rioni a Santiquattro

Just a short walk from the Colosseum, this is a solid first stop if you want to eat early or grab something before starting properly.

  • Thin Roman-style pizza – this is a sit down restaurant not the square roman pizza by the slice (that’s later)
  • Fast service (good if you donโ€™t want to linger too long)
  • Remember to try some of the white pizza base flavours and some chicoria here. Often tourists from elsewhere stick to your standard tomato based flavours but that means you are missing out on some of the best option!

๐Ÿ‘‰ Best for: quick, reliable start without heading too far off route

Alternative: street-style option

If you donโ€™t want a full sit-down meal, grab pizza al taglio (by the slice) from a nearby bakery โ€” quick, cheap, and very Roman.

๐Ÿ Stop 2 โ€” Trevi Fountain area (choose carefully)

This is one of the easiest places to end up with an overpriced, average meal โ€” so itโ€™s worth being selective here. There are lot’s of checked table cloths and waiters in black and white suits trying to tempt you in but try and resist

Piccolo Buco

This is a small, slightly hidden pizzeria that does things properly.

  • Crisp, light Roman-style pizzas
  • Small space, often busy
  • Good balance of quality + price for this location

๐Ÿ‘‰ Best for: quick lunch stop near Trevi

Il Ristoro dal Patriota

A better option if you want a proper sit-down meal without going too far off route.

  • Classic Roman pasta dishes
  • Seafood options
  • Courtyard-style setting away from the main rush

๐Ÿ‘‰ Best for: slower, relaxed meal near Trevi

๐Ÿฆ Gelateria Valentino

One of the better gelato spots in this area.

  • Natural colours (avoid bright, artificial displays elsewhere)
  • Wide flavour range with some local flavours

๐Ÿ‘‰ Best for: quick break before continuing

โ˜• Stop 3 โ€” Pantheon area (short pause or meal)

This part of the walk is perfect for slowing down a bit.

Colline Emiliane

A standout if youโ€™re after something slightly more refined.

  • Handmade pasta
  • Richer, northern Italian dishes
  • Frequented by locals

๐Ÿ‘‰ Best for: proper sit-down meal near the Pantheon but can still be a bit busy

Tazza dโ€™Oro (coffee stop)

If you donโ€™t want a full meal:

  • One of Romeโ€™s most famous coffee spots. We love the 70’s (maybe) style lettering of this place. You can see it in our walking video above!
  • Go here for a quick espresso stop. Un Cafe por favore!
  • Remember that standing at the bar is the local way to drink coffee and a cornetto (maybe filled with cream) is a must.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Best for: quick recharge without breaking the walk

Giolitti (Gelato)

Just near the Pantheon is the original Giolitti Gelato shop. Try the Mascorpone flavour to eat Gelato like a local and remember to pay at the cashier first to get a ticket before ordering your favourite flavour!

๐Ÿท Stop 4 โ€” Piazza Navona area (mid-walk reset)

By the time you reach Piazza Navona, youโ€™ve been walking for a while โ€” this is a good place to pause properly.

Saltimbocca Ristorante

A reliable option close to Piazza Navona.

  • Classic Roman dishes
  • Balanced between tourist-friendly and quality
  • Comfortable setting

๐Ÿ‘‰ Best for: mid-walk sit-down meal

Alternative tip

Avoid restaurants directly facing the square โ€” step one or two streets back for better quality and prices. If the restaurant has a huge menu out the front in English with pictures of the dishes ….. that’s a no!

๐Ÿ Stop 5 โ€” Vatican side (lighter options)

Once you cross toward the Vatican, food options become more spread out.

Pizzarium Bonci (short detour)

If youโ€™re willing to step slightly off route, this is one of the most famous pizza spots in Rome.

  • Gourmet pizza by the slice
  • Creative toppings
  • Worth the trip here as a detour even if you are not up to seeing the Vatican

๐Ÿ‘‰ Best for: something a bit different

๐Ÿท Final stop โ€” Trastevere (best area to finish)

This is where you should plan your main meal if possible. Trastevere is absolutely gorgeous and this is the suburb of Rome we dream about when planning a vacation. Narrow cobblestone streets, plants cascading over balconies, beautiful street lights, music in the evening and delicious food!

Da Enzo al 29

One of the most respected trattorias in Rome. There is always a long wait here and they do not take bookings, but this is a meal you will be talking about for months after you return home.

  • Carbonara, cacio e pepe, amatriciana
  • Small, authentic feel
  • Often a queue โ€” but worth it

๐Ÿ‘‰ Best for: classic Roman experience

Tonnarello

More lively and slightly more casual. The Tonnarello restaurants are in the busier area of Trastevere. If you get a table on the street, it’s the perfect people watching dinner spot.

  • Large portions
  • Pasta-focused menu
  • Popular but consistent

๐Ÿ‘‰ Best for: relaxed dinner with atmosphere

Otello

A quieter, more traditional option. Remember even in Rome you find different versions of the same dish that can vary greatly but are just as delicious in their own way. Try the Carbonara here, an entree of cicoria and zucchini flowers if they are on the menu!

  • Classic Roman dishes
  • Slightly less hectic
  • Good all-round choice

๐Ÿ‘‰ Best for: something calmer

๐Ÿฆ Fior di Luna (gelato)

If youโ€™re not ready to stop walking:

  • Natural, high-quality gelato
  • Good late-evening option
